look how clean and pretty compared to the shot of the 2 American radial powered beasts.

To be fair there certainly were some pretty American types too, the Mustang and Kittyhawk being two obvious examples. I have always like the difference between US and British aircraft. The designs have always represented their respective nations well I have always thought. Aircraft like the Mustang, Corair and thunderbolt etc with their glistening metal exteriors and their colourful liveries etc.(or should I say colorful when referring to US aircraft )They have always screamed hollywood glamour to me. Where as British aircraft seem to be a little more restrained, very graceful. Stiff upper lip all the way.

it is an interesting difference of philosophies and doctrines. you can see the development of the Hurricane out of the Hawker biplane series, and that of the Spitfire from the Schneider Cup racers. the radial became of prime consideration for the U.S. because of the Navy. then along comes something like the Boulton-Paul Defiant and you kind of wonder "who in the hell thought of THAT?"
