With the pilots keeping a watchful eye on each other. (I've done a lot of formation flying, though with helicopters rather than fixed wing.)

This angle makes their physical proximity seem almost an impossibility but I'm guessing that's an illusion caused by the lens? Clearly they were flying close, regardless. Again, great color and stop action.

Thank you for sharing that. I enjoyed it. Gee the lighting looks as though it would have been horrible for photos. Don't know how you do it. Though I'm not old enough to have remembered the era these planes came from, their appearance and throaty growl must have instilled fear in a lot of German hearts. These pilots are very good.

Yes I would imagine it would have been terrifying, especially the Mustang, when they pull high G, such as a dive airflow over the gunports creates a high pitched scream. That really must have been horrible to experience if you were it's enemy. There's a good example of that whistle here. [link]
