I have never seen one of these amazing planes yet in the US. Time to take a trip across the pond I guess! :) Great capture!

This is the last airworthy example and it isn't going to be around much longer either I'm afraid. The aircraft was retired from service in 1992, well actually it retired during the 80s as an operational aircraft but it was kept on by the RAF as a display aircraft until 1992. There was a massive campaign to get her flying again that came to fruition in 2007. Sadly though the project failed to get any major sponsors and it has been purely funded by donated money and as you can imagine it has been very expensive. It was announced a few months ago that 2013, is very likely to be the last season of airshows before she will once again grounded.

It is, but I think we all knew it couldn't last. At least we gave her one last chance to shine before she is consigned to the history books.

I don't like seeing a plane type being completely decommissioned. I like the idea of always having 2 flying ready models of military craft types for education purposes.

I was lucky enough to see a flyable version of the SR71 before it too was completely retired from service. I often wonder if the government isn't holding back a plane or 2 for those "just in case" type of scenarios.

Well I wouldn't be surprised, afterall the F-117 seems to have gone back to black so to speak. Supposedly completely retired in 2007, but there have been quite a few reported sightings of at least one being still actively flown. So who knows what is still out there. :D

Can anyone shed some light onto something that has puzzled me for ages now ... why is it cammo'ed on its belly?

I believe the answer to why Vulcans received wrap-around camouflage is because during Red Flag exercises in the late 1970s, defending SAM forces had found that the grey-painted undersides of the Vulcan became much more visible against the ground at high angles of bank.
